Woman's Remains Identified In McHenry County, Man Charged

(STMW) -- A man has been charged after the skeletal remains of a woman were discovered in his northwest suburban home in McHenry County.

The Illinois State Police Crime Lab identified the remains through DNA comparisons as 49-year-old Jacqueline R. Schaefer. Schaefer previously lived at the home where she was found in the 500 block of Country Club Road, the McHenry County Sheriff's office announced Monday.

A caretaker discovered Schaefer's skeletal remains Nov. 6 and contacted authorities, the release said. The sheriff's office previously said the body may have been inside the house for more than 18 months.

The McHenry County Coroner's office said Monday a cause of death has not officially been determined.

The day after the remains were discovered, the U.S. Marshal Service in Las Vegas, Nevada took the homeowner, William J. Ross, into custody and charged him with concealment of a homicidal death, a felony, the release said. He was ordered to be held on $100,000 bond.

Ross, 62, is next scheduled to appear Feb. 13 in a Nevada court for a status hearing.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about Schaefer or her death should contact the sheriff's office at (815) 334-4750.
