Two Arrested For Trying To Sell Fake Drugs On Craigslist

FOX LAKE (CBS) -- Two north suburban men who advertised fake narcotics for sale on Craigslist were arrested after a sting by undercover sheriff's detectives.

The pills, which the men advertised as Hydrocodone, were actually vitamins, police said.

Thomas A. Brown, 20; and Daniel D. Swan, 22, advertised 120 Hydrocodone pills for sale for $360 on Craigslist, according to a statement from the Lake County Sheriff's office.

The sheriff's special investigations unit got a tip about the ad, and detectives met the men to buy the pills Monday outside a Walgreens in the 0-100 block of North Route 12 in Fox Lake, the statement said.

Brown and Swan were surrounded by police, and Brown tried to escape by ramming the red 1999 Nissan minivan he was driving into an unmarked squad car, according to police.

The Nissan was stopped a short time later, and Brown again resisted arrest before being taken into custody

Brown, of the 200 block of North Milwaukee in Lake Villa, was charged with four felonies including criminal damage to government-supported property, possession of a lookalike substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, and aggravated reckless driving, police said.

He also faces four misdemeanor charges and three traffic citations.

Brown's bond was set at $25,000 and he is next scheduled to appear in court Jan. 7.

Swan, of the 200 block of East Grand Avenue in Fox Lake, was charged with felony possession of a lookalike substance and possession of a lookalike substance with intent to deliver, police said.

Bond was set at $5,000 and he is next due in court Jan. 29.
