New Red Cross App Can Help Your Pet In Emergencies

(CBS) -- There's a new app on the market today and it's designed to help your dog or cat in emergencies.

The American Red Cross Pet First Aid App isn't the only app on the market, but it's the newest. It came out Thursday for Androids and iPhones, and costs 99 cents.

Patricia Kemp of the Red Cross said you can set up a "profile" of your pet -- complete with pictures, medical history, and their registration number. She calls that one of the best features of the app, making it easier for you to provide info to a vet in case of an emergency.

She said the app provides "step by step instructions and tips for more than 25 common first aid or emergency situations for dogs and cats."

The app also shows the nearest hotels and shelters that are pet friendly.

Kemp said that's important, because "in disasters, we've seen a lot of people, they won't evacuate or go to a shelter, because they don't want to leave their pet behind."
