Metra Warning About Weather Delays On Monday
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Metra is warning about possible delays for Monday's commute, when wind chills may dive to 40 below.
In a service alert issued Friday morning, Metra said it will make "every reasonable effort to provide a timely and comfortable commute," but trains will likely be delayed.
Conductors will be operating at lower speeds to reduce stress on the rails, and Metra expects longer boarding times and station stops.
Monday's temperature will be "almost a mirror image of the cold we experienced a few weeks ago," according to National Weather Service spokesperson Stephen Rodriguez.
Rodriguez said he expects the cold to set in Sunday night when temperatures fall below zero.
Monday's high will hover around minus 3 with a wind chill between minus 25 and minus 35 during the day, according to Rodriguez.
Monday night's expected low is minus 17 with a wind chill of 30 to 40 below zero.
"In conditions like that, frostbite sets in in a matter of minutes," Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said temperatures will not rise above zero until Wednesday, when the high will be 10.
According to Metra's service alert, additional engineering and mechanical personnel will be working this weekend to keep switches operational and trains ready for service.
