Flames were jumping from the apartment's windows when the first firefighters arrived and were told that a child was trapped. Firefighters found the 3-year-old LeAndrea White on the bedroom floor, but Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Mark Nielsen said they were too late to save her.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at at 6:05 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

"The bedroom was really consumed, got into the hallway a little bit, smoked up the other rooms in the apartment but the amount of fire damage in the other rooms was moderate," said Nielsen.

Firefighters found no working smoke detectors and Nielson says had there been one, they probably would have saved the girl.

Paramedics transported a 40-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman to nearby St. Francis Hospital. Both are said to be in fair condition.
