City To Sell Vacant Lots In Englewood For $1
CHICAGO (AP) -- Residents in one of Chicago's most distressed neighborhoods will be able to buy vacant lots for a dollar as part of a city redevelopment plan.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Thursday the sale of city-owned land will be open to homeowners, block clubs and nonprofit groups in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.
He says it's part of a five-year housing plan meant to revitalize neighborhoods.
Emanuel says the goal is to return empty land to productive uses, including to expand yards and create gardens.
The city owns several hundred vacant lots in Englewood.
Applicants must own property on the same block, be current on tax payments and can't have other unpaid financial obligations to the city.
