Fireworks Lit In Gas Station Bathroom Precedes Police Standoff

(CBS) -- A tense standoff at a north suburban fast food restaurant and gas station drew dozens of police officers and forced customers and staff members to clear out after a series loud bangs were heard.

A man had barricaded himself in a bathroom around 5:30 p.m. at the commercial site near Highway 41 and Wadsworth Road in Wadsworth.

Police said the suspect was sitting in a stall and refused to let them in. When authorities tried to force their way in, they heard three loud bangs, prompting the clearing of the premises, Lake County Sgt. Sara Balmes told CBS 2's Pamela Jones.

It turns out he had lit fireworks, she said.

The 24-year-old suspect was taken into custody around 9 p.m. after police negotiators arrived. No one was injured.
