Gary City Employee Carjacked; 2 Teens, 2 Men Charged

GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- Authorities in Gary arrested and charged two men and two teen boys in connection with the carjacking of a city building inspector late Tuesday morning.

About 11:25 a.m., 53-year-old Kenneth Jenkins was sitting in a city-owned Ford Escape in the 4100 block of Washington Street. While in the SUV, he saw two males walk up to the vehicle, according to a statement from Gary police.

One knocked on the driver's side window while the other drew a handgun and pointed it at Jenkins, ordering him out of the vehicle, authorities said. The male with the gun then asked him if there was any gas in the SUV.

After going through Jenkins' pockets and asking him if he had any money, the two got into the vehicle and drove east on 41st Street, police said. In addition to the vehicle, the two made off with electronics that were also owned by the city.

About 3:15 p.m., officer Jamal Milton saw the SUV with four people in it while he was patrolling the area near 37th Avenue and Washington Street, police said. The four ran from the SUV after realizing Milton had spotted them, but all were eventually arrested and later charged.

Dwayne Crisler, 23, was charged with carjacking, pointing a loaded firearm and robbery; Devante Pope, 18, was charged with criminal trespassing and resisting; A 14-year-old boy was charged with carjacking and robbery; and a 17-year-old was charged with criminal trespassing and resisting, according to police.

"I applaud the efforts of the Gary Police Department's Patrol and Narcotics Divisions who worked alongside Top 200 officers to apprehend the ... suspects only hours after the crime had been committed," Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said in a statement.
