Toddler Dies After Being Pulled From West Suburban Pond

MONTGOMERY, Ill. (STMW) -- A 2-year-old boy died Wednesday after being pulled from a retention pond Monday afternoon near west suburban Montgomery.

The boy has been identified as Mohamed Qattum, of the 200 block of Fernwood Road in Montgomery, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Kendall County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a missing boy about 12:15 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of Fernwood Road in an unincorporated area near Montgomery, a statement from the sheriff's office said.

Qattum apparently walked away from his mother and other siblings, and fell into a nearby retention pond, which was partially iced-over, sheriff's police said Tuesday.

Deputies and officers from nearby police departments found the boy and were able to pull him from the water, the statement said.

He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and was later pronounced dead at 2:06 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

No foul play is suspected as the Kendall County Sheriff's office investigates.
