(CBS) Former Bears return man Devin Hester, who’s now an Atlanta Falcon, tweeted Wednesday morning that he wanted to remain in Chicago but that circumstances didn’t work out.

The tweets seemingly came in response to some feedback Hester was getting on Twitter from fans. The Bears’ decision to let him walk spurred a lot of talk, though most understood Chicago was better off spending money to revamp its maligned defense rather than spend it on a return man.

In regards to “I wanted to retire” as a Bear, Hester still could sign a ceremonial one-day contract at the end of his career to accomplish that. There doesn’t seem to be any ill will between the sides, each understanding the business.

Hester is the NFL’s all-time record holder in punt returns for touchdowns (13), total kick returns for touchdowns (18) and return touchdowns (20).
