Woman Charged In Calumet Heights Crash That Injured Cops

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A woman is facing several charges in connection with a crash that injured two Chicago Police officers Sunday night in the South Side Calumet Heights neighborhood.

Makeeba Gates, 20, was charged Wednesday with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident, and cited for driving on a suspended license, operating a motor vehicle without insurance and failure to reduce speed for emergency vehicles, according to Chicago Police.

Officers were responding to an emergency call with their lights and siren on, heading northbound in the 8800 block of South Jeffery Boulevard when they were struck by a silver Pontiac that was westbound on 89th Street at 10:45 p.m., police said.

The force of the crash smashed the police vehicle into another SUV near the intersection, with the squad car flipping over, police said.

The two officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and have since been released, police said Wednesday.

Gates, the driver of the Pontiac, ran away from the crash scene but was later arrested at her home in the 8800 block of South Clyde Avenue, police said. She is expected to appear in bond court Wednesday.
