Mariano's To Open New Store In Bronzville

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mariano's, the popular grocery store chain now has plans to build another store on Chicago's South Side, this one in Bronzeville, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

The new Mariano's will be built on now vacant CHA property around the old Ida B. Wells project site and 4th Ward Alderman Will Burns says it will bring healthy food into an area that has been underserved.

"For a long time, people on the South Side have felt that they haven't gotten their fair share and this Mariano's investment shows people believe in the South Side and the South Side is a place to invest," said Burns.

Mayor Emanuel says he told company chairman Robert Mariano that if he wanted to be in Chicago, the mayor would help him anywhere but Mariano's also has to be everywhere.

"We are ready to work on other properties to bring this kind of public and private partnership to make sure every community is represented," said Emanuel.

The Bronzville Mariano's be similar to others recently opened in Chicago, employing 400 and offering fresh food options for those moving into the revitalized and increasingly popular near South Side neighborhood.

In the past three years, newly opened Mariano's stores in Chicago have created more than 3,500 new jobs.
