Man Sentenced To 35 Years For Killing Man Who Intervened In Fight

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man convicted of fatally stabbing a man who tried breaking up a domestic fight was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday.

Demetrius Jackson, 34, was found guilty of first-degree murder on June 16 following a bench trial, according to court records.

On Nov. 21, 2012, Jackson was arguing with his wife near their home in the 10300 block of South Forest Avenue when William Terry stepped in to stop the fight, police said at the time.

Jackson took out a kitchen knife and stabbed Terry multiple times then drove off in a van, police said. The woman was not injured.

Terry, 55, of the 14100 block of South Tracy Avenue in Riverdale, was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center about an hour later, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Jackson was sentenced to 35 years in prison at a hearing Wednesday, court records show. He was given credit for more than a year and a half spent in jail since his arrest.
