Rauner Steps Up Attacks As Poll Numbers Fall

(CBS) -- Behind in the latest poll, Republican candidate for Governor Bruce Rauner is stepping up his attacks on what he calls the corruption of incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn.

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports Rauner is accusing Governor Quinn of presiding over a cesspool of political hiring at the Illinois Department of Transportation.

"Pat Quinn is not the folksy, bumbling fool he'd like us to think he is," Rauner said. "He knows what he is doing. He knows what he has done."

A new Chicago Tribune poll shows Quinn with an 11 point lead right now, something Rauner dismisses.

"You know what, these polls are going to bounce around, they are going to go up and down," he said. "The only poll that matters is November 4."

Meanwhile, Pat Quinn's running mate for lieutenant governor Paul Vallas accuses Rauner of profiting from fraud and abuse from one of the healthcare firms his holding company ran.

"Mister Rauner takes no responsibility, he refuses to discuss what he knew, when he knew it and what he did about it, but at the end of the day he continues to take the profits," Vallas said.

Rauner says no one working for him has been accused of wrongdoing.

"Each company has its own board and its own management team. We've financed hundreds and hundreds of companies. Occasionally, some of them fail. Most of them have done very well and I'm proud of our track record.
