Snow Falls As High Temperatures Hover Near Record Lows
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Cold temperatures Saturday may break a 79-year-old record as light snow fell on the Chicago area Saturday morning.
The high at 7:15 a.m. was expected to be 47 degrees -- one degree lower than the lowest high set on Oct. 4, 1935, National Weather Service Meteorologist Kevin Donofrio said.
"We have a pretty good chance of having a high today below [48 degrees]," Donofrio said.
The low is expected to dip to 39 degrees, according to the weather service.
Light snow was reported about 7:10 a.m., which came southeast from Wisconsin. Flurries were expected for Cook, DuPage, Lake, McHenry, Kane and Kendall counties. This is the third earliest snowfall on record, the weather service said. The earliest was recorded on Sept. 25 in both 1928 and 1942.
"It will generally be away from the immediate downtown area, but it's not inconceivable that the area could see a flurry or flake or two," Donofrio said.
Light snow was also reported in Rockford about 4:54 a.m., the weather service said. It is Rockford's second earliest snowfall on record, with the earliest standing at Oct. 3, 1951, the weather service said.
Though a record may be broken, Donofrio said temperatures won't be low enough for any serious snowfall or accumulation.
