Four Charged In Shooting Death Of Skokie Teen

(CBS/STMW) Four people have been charged in a shooting last week that killed a 17-year-old Niles North High School student and wounded another.

Last Sunday, Skokie Police found Maxwell Gadau and a 17-year-old girl in a car in the 9200 block of Kedvale Ave with gunshot wounds. Gadau was pronounced dead at the scene and the girl remains hospitalized. Both were Skokie residents and students at Niles North High School.

Dzevad Avdic, 19, Myles Hughes, 19, Jeremy Ly, 19 and Nicholas Smith have all been charged with first-degree murder as well as attempted murder and armed robbery. Hughes, Ly and Smith appeared in bond court on Sunday and were denied bail. Avdic was denied bond in a court appearance Monday morning.

Both Avdic and Ly graduated from Niles North High School in 2013, the school said in a statement.

Prosecutors said Avdic, of the 5900 block of South Honore, was planning a robbery and asked Ly for a good target. Ly, of the 8100 block of Lowell in Skokie, allegedly suggested a 17-year-old girl who he said would "give it up easily" if Avdic had a gun, the Sun-Times reports.

Avdic texted the girl on Sept. 24, claiming to be an acquaintance and setting up a drug deal with her, Assistant State's Attorney David Mullner said.

Avdic followed up with a phone call on Sept. 28 and arranged to buy marijuana from her, Mullner said. Avdic then allegedly drove Hughes, Smith and another suspect to meet her. Ly was not present, Mullner said.

Gadau and the 17-year-old girl allegedly met Hughes, of the 4200 block of 81st Street, and the other suspect in front of 9246 Kedvale.

The 17-year-old girl got in the driver's seat of her car, Gadau in the front passenger seat, Hughes in the rear passenger seat and the other suspect in the rear driver's seat.

The suspect who has not been arrested pulled out a gun and demanded marijuana from the 17-year-old girl but she refused, Mullner said. The suspect shot Gadau once in the back, killing him, and then shot the girl in the face, Mullner said.

The four suspects fled in a car driven by Avdic, Mullner said. Smith, of 3800 block of West 84th Street, pulled out an ounce of pot taken from the girl's car and the group began to smoke it.

Mullner said the girl is hospitalized, on a respirator and will likely need to have her jaw wired shut. She will also need surgery to repair her jaw and vertebrae, he said.

The girl identified Hughes in a photo lineup, Mullner said.
