Pair Charged In Carjacking, Chase

(STMW) -- A man and a 17-year-old boy have been charged with hijacking an elderly man's car and leading police on a North Side chase that ended in the Uptown neighborhood Wednesday night.

Joe Milton, 21, and an unidentified 17-year-old boy each face one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking of a handicapped person, a felony, according to a statement from Chicago Police. The teen was also charged with one felony count of aggravated fleeing of police, three counts of misdemeanor assault, one misdemeanor count of leaving the scene and one misdemeanor count of resisting or obstructing an officer.

A 76-year-old man was parking his 1998 Mercedes about 9:30 p.m. in a garage in the 3600 block of West Peterson when Milton and the teen walked up, hit him over the head and took off in his car, police said.

Officers on patrol in a squad car spotted the stolen car, which led them on a car chase that ended when the Mercedes crashed into another vehicle in the 4600 block of North Beacon, police said. The alleged carjackers tried to run away but were arrested nearby.

The elderly man was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital and an officer hurt during the foot chase was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said. Both were treated and released Wednesday night.

The driver of the vehicle that the carjackers allegedly drove into on Beacon was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where his condition had stabilized, police said.

Neither Milton nor the teen were hurt, police said.

Milton, of the 5300 block of West Van Buren, is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday.
