Second Cop Was Injured In Shootout With Fugitive Suspect This Week
(CBS) -- A Chicago police captain wounded in a shootout earlier this week is home after spending two nights in the hospital, and authorities said a second member of the department was also wounded in the Englewood standoff.
Capt. Ed Kulbida, second-in-command in the Englewood District, was shot twice and suffered some hearing loss.
The man accused of shooting him, 42-year-old Daniel Brown, is now facing murder and attempted murder charges.

It turns out, another Chicago Police officer -- a detective -- was shot in that incident.
Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy says the detective was so focused on getting Kulbida to safety -- while still under fire -- that he didn't even realize he had been hit until Wednesday.
"A 3-millimeter piece of bullet entered into his leg and he didn't even realize it. He had what he thought was Capt. Kulbida's blood, and then when he was getting undressed he found this huge welt, and his wife made him go to the hospital," McCarthy said Thursday. "They took an X-ray and saw that there was something in there, and it was a projectile."
McCarthy says the detective will be fine. As for Kulbida, he was released from Stroger Hospital around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. He sent an email to the entire department thanking his fellow officers for their support.
McCarthy says the captain also knows how fortunate he is to be alive.
"Either one of those two bullets that he got hit with could've killed him if they were millimeters in a different direction," he said.
As for the gun used in the shootout, McCarthy says it was 40-cal. automatic with an extended magazine that was purchased by Brown's girlfriend in November 2012. It fits the pattern of a straw purchase because Brown is a convicted felon and can't legally buy a gun on his own.
Brown is charged with felony murder in connection with the death of Daniel Jackson, who was in the apartment with Brown at the time of the shoot-out.
Chicago police say it appears Brown killed Jackson.
