County Official Critical Of Animal Control Department

CHICAGO (CBS) -- With county budget hearings about to get under way, Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey has some questions about the Department of Animal and Rabies Control.

"Taxpayers have a right to know their tax dollars are being spent in the best way possible," Fritchey told WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller.

"And when we look at some of the expenditures in the budget at Animal Control right now, I'm not sure that's the case. But rather than rush to judgment, I'm going to give the director an opportunity to answer some questions as far as what they're doing, how they're doing it. And if we could be doing it better."

Fritchey says some of the administrative expenses "appear to be out of whack."

County Animal Control Director Dr. Donna Alexander tells WBBM: "We have done everything to improve Animal Control to the point where we are noted as one of the best animal control [departments] in the country."
