Cubs Sign Tsuyoshi Wada To 1-Year Deal

(CBS) The Cubs and left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada have agreed to a one-year deal, the club announced Monday morning. Terms of the deal weren't announced.

The 33-year-old Wada was 4-4 with a 3.25 ERA in 13 starts for the Cubs in 2014, which was his debut season. He had 57 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings and compiled a 1.24 WHIP.

Wada joined the rotation after Chicago traded starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland on July 4.

Depending on who the Cubs sign in free agency, Wada could be in the competition for the No. 5 spot in the rotation in 2015. The Cubs have made it clear they seek a top-of-the-rotation starter, and they could be looking for two new starters as they hope to contend for an NL Central crown next season.

Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks are locks to make the rotation after strong 2014 seasons, and despite some struggles, Travis Wood will likely be in the rotation as well.
