Waukegan Athletes Will Scrimmage This Weekend, For Old Time's Sake
(CBS) – Seniors lost out on making many memories during the recent Waukegan teachers strike.
Now the schools are trying to make up for that, WBBM Newsradio's Cisco Cotto reports.
The monthlong strike meant football, soccer and cross country teams and the marching band missed out on games and competitions. That's especially hard on seniors.
Waukegan Athletes To Scrimmage This Weekend
Waukegan schools spokesman Nicholas Alajakis says officials came up with the idea to have teams scrimmage this weekend. The football team will play the flag variety of their sport.
"While they won't be in pads, and it's not going to be contact, they'll at least be out there and be able to spend some time with their teammates and friends that they've had all these years," Alajakis said.
Soccer players will scrimmage, too.
Alajakis concedes it's not the same as playing for real, but it's one more chance to make some memories.
The Waukegan High School football team will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Weiss Field. The event will also feature performances from the poms dance team and cheerleaders.
The boys' soccer team will meet earlier, at 8 a.m. Saturday at McAree Field.
The marching band was scheduled to perform at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Weiss Field.
