Jose Abreu Named AL Rookie Of The Year

(CBS) White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has been named the unanimous AL Rookie of the Year award winner by the Baseball Writers Association of America, MLB announced Monday evening.

Abreu beat out Yankees reliever Dellin Betances and Angles starter Matt Shoemaker.

He received 150 points, far ahead of his competition. Abreu received all 30 first-place votes, making him the ninth unanimous winner in the history of the award, the White Sox said in a news release.

After signing a six-year, $68-million contract last year to come over from Cuba, Abreu hit .317 with 36 homers and 107 RBIs in 2014, when he was also named to the AL All-Star Team. Abreu became the first rookie in baseball history to rank among the top five in his league in each Triple Crown category.

The 27-year-old Abreu led the majors with a .581 slugging percentage and was second with a .964 OPS.

Abreu was named the the AL's Rookie of the Month three times. He also won a Silver Slugger award and was considered by many to be an MVP candidate, though he wasn't one of the three finalists for that award.

Abreu was also recently named the AL Rookie of the Year award winner by the Sporting News.

Abreu became the sixth player in White Sox history to be named the AL Rookie of the Year. The last to do it before Monday was Ozzie Guillen in 1985.

White Sox left-hander Chris Sale is also an award finalist, as he's up for the AL Cy Young honor. Sale was 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA and 208 strikeouts in 26 starts in 2014.

The Cy Young winner will be announced Wednesday.
