Now Joe Maddon's Offering To Buy Fans A Round Of Drinks
(CBS) A lot was made of new Cubs manager Joe Maddon's offer recently at his introductory press conference to buy a beer and a shot for everyone at the Cubby Bear.
What it didn't do was cost Maddon any money. His Cubs bosses didn't let him pick up the tab, and not that many people drank anyway. Most of the people in attendance were media members who had work to do and, as Maddon put it, they didn't want to drink during the day.
Well, Maddon's offer has now taken on new life. In an interview on the Dan Patrick Show on Friday morning, Maddon said he hopes to extend the offer to the fans at some point next season.
"My plan is to pick a game after a Cubs win, head on over there and just do it for the fans one day," Maddon told Dan Patrick. "I'm going to try and pick one of the lower-attendance days to go over there."
Maddon's currently in the Tampa area after visiting friends and family in Arizona and California. Still, he can barely wait for the new season to get started.
"I really plan on bringing my same program to Chicago," Maddon said of his approach in nine seasons managing the Tampa Bay Rays. "It a daily approach. I'm really going to preach about staying in the present tense. Pragmatic. Patience. I know people there have been patient for over a century. I understand how difficult that may be, but for me, it's nothing different than bringing your program there and attempting to have it work in Chicago."
Maddon also admitted he was "surprised" that the Rays pursued tampering charges after he left for the Cubs upon opting out of his contract.
