Frigid Air Brings Swirling Fog To Lakefront

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Tuesday morning's frigid weather created something of a spectacle along the lakefront.

WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports the bitter cold air over the relatively warm water of the lake created fog that swirled in the wind.

Plumes of mist rose from the surface of the lake, illuminated by the sun.

Matha Barbiaux marveled at the sight as she snapped pictures along the Lakefront Trail.

"It's absolutely gorgeous. It's very haunting. It's like ghosts coming out of the lake; absolutely gorgeous," she said. "You have to capture this."

At the same time, she was wondering what happened to autumn.

"Yeah, that's the bad thing about it. It was one day of autumn, and then winter. Not a good thing, but Chicago. What can you do?" Barbiaux said.

Cyclists and joggers, undaunted by the wintry weather, bundled up as they chugged along the trail.

At 57th Street, just across from the Museum of Science and Industry, Darnell was selling fruit to motorists stopped at the red light on Lake Shore Drive.

"I've got on layers. I've got on two shirts, a jacket, two hoodies, and my jumpsuit. I've got my boots on, two pairs of socks, a pair of gloves," he said.

He's been selling fruit to drivers on Lake Shore Drive for 12 years, even in winter.

"Why not? I mean, I'm out here making money," he said. "Hey, that's what it's all about. I make sure it won't freeze. I can't give customers frozen fruit."
