New Trier Looking At Altered Class Schedule During Construction Project

CHICAGO (CBS) -- New Trier Township High School has proposed a new schedule for students, as officials prepare for a $100 million overhaul of the more than 100-year-old campus in Winnetka.

School Board President Alan Dolinko said a lot of people would be unhappy, for a lot of different reasons.

If approved by the full board, the new calendar would be used for three years, starting next school year, while crews demolish three of the school's oldest buildings, and replace them with a new 268,000-square-foot facility.

Officials want to make the most of the warmer weather during the next few years, so the district has proposed a new calendar it hopes will allow construction to finish by the start of the 2018-19 school year.

Spring break and winter break would continue as normal, though summer break would be longer, and classes would be held on some religious holidays students have had off before – including Rosh Hashanah and Good Friday.

Students who elect to stay home on religious holidays would be excused.
