Gary Police: Suspect In Custody For Thanksgiving Shootings

GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- The suspect in the early Thanksgiving morning slaying of a 31-year-old Gary woman is in custody facing charges of murder and attempted murder, according to police.

A desk sergeant with the Gary Police Department confirmed Friday a suspect had been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death Thursday of Kennette Oneal, of the 1000 block of Matthews Street. The sergeant declined to provide his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media. The suspect's name was not released.

Lt. Thomas Pawlak said Thursday the incident unfolded about 4:45 a.m. Pawlak said the suspect pulled a gun and began shooting and two women ran out of the house.

Oneal was shot multiple times. She was found in the alley. The second woman was found by police in the back yard and was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus in Gary. No further information on the second victim was released and her condition was unknown.

The suspect is facing an attempted murder charge for the shooting of the second woman, the sergeant said.
