Report: Cubs Likely To Tender Travis Wood By Deadline

(CBS) The Cubs are expected to tender a contract to left-hander Travis Wood by Tuesday night's deadline, according to a report from ESPNChicago.com.

Wood had a poor 2014 season, going 8-13 with a 5.03 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. If he's not tendered a contract by Tuesday at 11 p.m. CT, he will become a free agent, but the Cubs appear to have the 27-year-old in their future plans still. The Cubs have 10 players who are arbitration eligible this offseason and must tender contracts to keep control of them.

The other arbitration-eligible players for the Cubs are outfielder Justin Ruggiano, outfielder Chris Coghlan, infielder Luis Valbuena, catcher Welington Castillo, catcher John Baker, reliever Wesley Wright, reliever Pedro Strop, reliever Felix Doubront and starting right-hander Jake Arrieta.

Wood made $3.9 million last season.

After a contract is tendered, the sides can continue to work on a deal or go to an arbitration hearing before spring training.

"Travis knows that he needs to work hard to put this year behind him and get back to being who he was," Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said in September. "And if he does that, then he has absolutely nothing to be concerned with."

Wood was an All-Star in 2013, going 9-12 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.

Arrieta and right-hander Kyle Hendricks are locks to be in Chicago's 2015 rotation, but beyond that, it's up for grabs. The Cubs signed left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada to a one-year deal in early November, and he may figure into the back end of the rotation. They're also heavily pursuing free agent left-hander Jon Lester.
