(STMW) — A man is charged with attempted murder for allegedly hitting a Drug Enforcement Agency official with a vehicle Sunday as the agent was working on a narcotics case.

Myron Russell, 30, is charged with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated battery, and remains hospitalized following the incident near 82nd and Kedzie, authorities said.

At the time, Russell was free on bond for an pending drug case at the Bridgeview courthouse, Cook County state’s attorney’s office Tandra Simonton said.

DEA agents and task force officers were working a narcotics investigation in the 8200 block of South Kedzie when Chicago police responded to a call of shots fired about 12:50 p.m., officials said.

The DEA confirmed its agents stopped a vehicle thought to be transporting cocaine and tried to arrest its driver when the car entered a gas station at 82nd and Kedzie. But the driver tried to pull out of the gas station, hitting the agent and two other vehicles.

The agent suffered a head injury and a broken leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to an emailed DEA statement.

The agency also acknowledged that shots were fired during the incident, and said the suspect was being treated at another hospital. The vehicle involved was abandoned — and later recovered — and found to contain drugs, according to the DEA.

Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered Russell held without bail Wednesday for a violation of a bail bond in the previous case, Simonton said.

Russell, of the 6500 block of South Fairfield, is scheduled to appear at a separate bond hearing on the new charges on Dec. 29.
