Classes Resume At Chicago Public Schools Friday

(CBS) -- Chicago Public Schools will be open Friday, following two days off days because of harsh winter weather.

The CPS system announced Thursday evening that classes will resume tomorrow morning.

"While temperatures are expected to remain cold, we are welcoming our students back to class on Friday," CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said in a prepared statement. "We urge all parents and families to make sure their children are prepared for the cold weather conditions, and CPS is following its winter weather plan to ensure all students and school personnel have a warm, comfortable and safe learning environment."

School buildings will open 30 minutes early and Safe Passage workers will be out in full force, officials said. Families in need of assistance or support are encouraged to call 311.

CPS is preparing to serve breakfast to more than 150,000 students and 250,000 lunches tomorrow, officials said.

The Chicago school system serves 396,000 students in 664 schools. It is the nation's third-largest school district.
