(CBS) — About half-dozen homes were without heat after a gas leak in the Gage Park neighborhood on the South Side Tuesday evening.

Chicago firefighters were called to the 5700 block of South Spaulding after residents began complaining about a strong odor of natural gas. They ran tests and found in some of the homes, the readings were dangerously high. The gas was turned off.

Families were dealing with it the best they can.

“We had to take my two-year-old and take her to my mother in law’s house,” said Irelis Contraras. “I don’t think we can stay her tonight either.

Neighbors say water crews had been digging beneath the intersection today. Peoples Gas were on the scene to find the source of the gas leak and repair it.
