Riverside Cops Slap Felony Charges On Motorist Arrested For 22nd Time

Chronic Traffic Offender Faces Felony Charges

(CBS) -- A West suburban motorist is facing felony charges after being arrested for the 22nd time.

Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel says 62-year-old Alfredo Luna is now facing felony charges. The Riverside man has had multiple arrests for speeding and DUIs.

Luna was most recently stopped going 56 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone near an elementary school. Prosecutors agreed to the more-serious felony charges, given Luna's history, Weitzel says.

His department is working to make sure Luna doesn't get his car back, the chief said. And if the Riverside police keep it, they plan to sell it, with proceeds going toward traffic enforcement.

Weitzel also says he's planning to push for legislation that would create a separate statute for habitual DUI or traffic offenders.

It would give officers the power to charge a person with a class 4 felony and have their car seized.
