The Bernstein Brief: NFL Interest In Marc Trestman Is Mind-Boggling

By Dan Bernstein-
CBSChicago.com senior columnist

(CBS) Marc Trestman is a hot commodity, if reports are true.

You read that correctly.

The same overmatched milquetoast who turned the Bears into an EPA Superfund site is probably going to land a job as an offensive coordinator. He recently interviewed in Cleveland, and now Jack Del Rio is said to want him to join the Raiders in that capacity.

Trestman's track record has suggested his offense can succeed in the first year, and then it caves in completely in the next. NFL advance scouting is better, more complete and more specific than ever now, which suggests that even assuming any success out of the gate could be a stretch. He's been figured out many times and hasn't pulled anything out of his "toolbox of concepts" to get ahead of the game.

As long as he's not leading anyone or anything, he probably won't be able to ruin another team. A mere game-planning and play-calling role limits the damage he can do.

But there's a reason that after multiple shots at steady offensive coordinator work he found himself exiled from the country.
