CHICAGO (CBS) — A 60-year-old man was shot and stabbed to death Monday night in the West Town neighborhood, and the 1-year-old girl he was babysitting was found safe at a relative’s home.

Police said the man was found dead in an apartment in the 100 block of North Wood Street, after firefighters responded to a fire alarm around 9 p.m., and forced entry into the apartment. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office has identified the man as 60-year-old Robert Smith.

Relatives said he was babysitting his 1-year-old grandniece at the time. Hours later, his grandniece was found unharmed at a relative’s home. She was taken to a hospital for a checkup.

Police said investigators do not know yet how she arrived at the relative’s home, or how long she had been there.
