More Than 250 'L' Cars On Orange And Brown Lines To Be Upgraded
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The 'L' cars that for 20 years were the CTA's newest are finally going to begin an overdue mid-life rehab next month.
CTA has been buying the needed parts incrementally for the 257 1993-vintage 'L' cars. With the award of a final contract to upgrade the air conditioning units, everything needed is on hand and the $166 million dollar rehab project will begin.
The rehab work was first announced in August 2013.
CTA's Skokie Shops will perform the overhauls in-house on the 3200-series 'L' cars, which serve the Orange and Brown Lines. The transit agency says the cars will emerge from the rebuild more reliable and comfortable. In addition to the upgraded air conditioning units, wiring will be replaced, motors and batteries upgraded, along with doors, springs and control equipment.
The makeover even includes pricey LED destination signs.
The rehabilitation work is expected to be completed in 2017. Ultimate retirement of the cars is scheduled in 2022, with delivery of the 7000-series cars now being ordered. Federal guidelines recommend mid-life rehab after about 12 years, with retirement at 25 years.
