Chicago Auto Show: It's Not Just For Guys Anymore

CHICAGO (CBS) -- You might be surprised to learn who will be attending the Chicago Auto Show, which opens Saturday and runs through Feb. 22.

If you're thinking men and boys, and grease monkeys with tool chests, Auto Show CEO Dave Sloan says last year's research says otherwise.

The study, performed by Forsythe Research, showed 54 percent of those attending the 2014 Auto Show were women and 46 percent men.

"To me that's almost unbelievable because it's been such a male-dominated event," Sloan said with a laugh.

He said the Chicago Automobile Trade Association, which sponsors the Auto Show, has tried for years to make the show more attractive to women. He questions the 54-46 finding, but said he would not be surprised if the attendance approached 50-50.

Sloan said other statistics show women have a say in 80 percent of the nation's auto purchases. And, he asks, why not bring the family to see if everyone fits? Sloan said the Auto Show's attempts to sell itself as family-friendly and fun has helped.

He said the fact that there's more to the show than row after row of stationary cars attracts women and families. He said they love the interactive exhibits, including several that let you simulate an actual race course, as well as the always popular Jeep, Dodge and Toyota Test Tracks, all with full-sized vehicles. There are even miniature Ford F-150s and a course for the kids to drive.
