Light Snow To Follow Dangerously Bitter Cold In Chicago
(STMW) -- A winter storm that could dump up to 7 inches of snow on northwest Indiana is expected to leave only trace amounts of the white stuff in Chicago on Sunday, but everyone will have to deal with the dangerously ffrigid temperatures until then.
A National Weather Service wind chill advisory for northern Illinois and Indiana went into effect at 8 p.m. Saturday and is slated to run until 9 a.m. Sunday.
Saturday night's low of minus 4 degrees in Chicago could feel as bone-chilling as 30 degrees below zero overnight, according to the weather service. The coldest wind chills are expected across north central Illinois.
Sunday's high of 11 degrees plummets to as low as minus 24 when factoring in the wind chill, before the mercury tops out at about 20 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, forecasters said.
The wind chills could lead to frostbite on exposed skin within minutes and an increased risk of hypothermia, forecasters said. Anyone venturing outdoors is urged to wear a hat and gloves.
In addition to the wind chill advisory, a winter storm warning is in effect for Porter County, including the city of Valparaiso, until 9 a.m. Sunday, the weather service said. Snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches are expected, and winds could reach speeds of 40 to 45 mph throughout most of the county and up to 50 mph near Lake Michigan, according to the weather service.
Less than an inch of snow is expected in Chicago as a result of that lake-effect system, forecasters said.
