College Student Charged With Videotaping Student In Her Shower

(STMW) -- A student at a west suburban Christian college is facing felony charges after prosecutors say he secretly videotaped a female student taking showers at her apartment for nearly five months.

Judge Richard Russo set bond for 24-year-old Alexander Lim at $75,000 on Wednesday after the Wheaton College student was charged with unauthorized video recording, according to the DuPage County state's attorney's office.

"People expect and are entitled to complete privacy while in their residence," state's attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement. "The invasion of privacy alleged in this case is beyond disturbing and will be met with the full force of the law."

About 6 p.m. Sunday, the woman was taking a shower in her university-owned apartment when she "noticed what appeared to be a watch facing directly towards her," a statement from prosecutors said. "She also noticed that the watch had a video lens on its face ..."

The woman called campus police, who called Wheaton police, who discovered the device was a "spyview camera watch."

Prosecutors allege Lim put the camera in the apartment washroom and "had been secretly video recording the woman as she showered since October 2014."

Lim, a Wheaton resident, was arrested without incident Monday evening.

"The actions that Mr. Lim is accused of would be a violation of College policies and the Community Covenant we agree to live by," Wheaton College Vice President for Student Development Paul Chelsen said in the statement. "We are eager to comply with the authorities investigating this matter, and will provide ongoing care to everyone affected by this situation."

Lim's next court appearance is scheduled for March 23 before Judge John Kinsella. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison.
