Report: Suspect Shot By Police Suffered 16 Gunshot Wounds

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An independent journalistic organization has published an autopsy report indicating a 17-year-old suffered 16 gunshot wounds when he was killed by Chicago police officers four months ago.

Laquan McDonald was shot after he allegedly slashed the tires of several vehicles, including a police squad car, and allegedly refused officers' orders to drop his knife on Oct. 20, 2014.

Police have said officers were responding to a call about someone breaking into cars in the 4100 block of South Karlov Avenue when they spotted a young man armed with a knife, who slashed the tire of their squad car, and damaged their front windshield.

When McDonald fled, officers gave chase, and confronted him a block away, according to police. When he refused officers' orders to drop the knife, and began walking toward them, the officers shot him.

The Invisible Institute obtained McDonald's autopsy report from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. The report indicated he suffered 16 gunshot wounds.

The wounds included a graze to his head, and bullets to his neck, chest, arms, and legs.

The Institute and University of Chicago law professor Craig Futterman have called on the city to release squad car video of McDonald's shooting death. Futterman has said a witness tells him McDonald was retreating from police when he was shot.

The Independent Police Review Authority was still investigating the shooting as of Tuesday. It was unclear whether one or more officers fired the shots that killed McDonald.
