Cardinal George Hospitalized For Tests

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cardinal Francis George has been hospitalized for testing, as doctors monitor the progress of his cancer since he halted treatment earlier this year.

The Chicago Archdiocese said the cardinal was admitted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood on Sunday, and "will stay for several days of tests to evaluate his condition."

CBS 2's Jay Levine reports Cardinal George experienced leg pain this weekend and that doctors told him to come to the hospital and undergo tests that were previously scheduled for the end of the month.

Levine reports that George is expected to leave the hospital Thursday and that the test results are not expected to be released.

In late January, George announced his cancer treatments had stopped, and his doctors have run out of options, after an experimental drug proved ineffective for him.

"The Cardinal continues to count on the prayers of so many who have written to wish him God's blessings," the Archdiocese said in an email.

George revealed a year ago that he had begun chemotherapy for kidney cancer, his third bout with cancer. He has said he expects cancer to be the likely cause of his death.

He retired as Chicago's archbishop last fall, and was replaced by Archbishop Blase Cupich.
