Delays Hinder Last-Minute Attempts To Pay Property Tax Bills

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Last-minute attempts to pay Cook County property tax bills by Tuesday's deadline were being thwarted by technology.

When Frank Johnson tried to pay the first installment of his county tax bill on-line, he got this message:

"Not responding."

So he called the Cook County Treasurer's office, and was told he could pay at a Chase bank branch.

"Well, there's only two problems with that. Number one, I'm home sick from work," he said. "Number two, I did leave my payment slip at my desk at work by mistake, not knowing I was going to be home sick, and so I would have to travel from the suburbs downtown to get this payment notice, because Chase will not allow you to pay unless you actually have the actual tax bill."

The treasurer's website posted this message: "Due to the high volume of traffic at this time, you may experience slower processing times making online payments."

WBBM is trying to reach the Cook County Treasurer's office for comment.
