(CBS) — Cardinal Francis George is at home after being hospitalized earlier this week, a spokesperson for the Chicago Archdiocese confirmed.
George was admitted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood on Sunday after he experienced leg pain. The cardinal underwent tests that were previously scheduled for the end of the month.
In late January, George announced his cancer treatments had stopped, and his doctors have run out of options, after an experimental drug proved ineffective for him.
George revealed a year ago that he had begun chemotherapy for kidney cancer, his third bout with cancer. He has said he expects cancer to be the likely cause of his death.
He retired as Chicago’s archbishop last fall, and was replaced by Archbishop Blase Cupich.
