Gunfire Kills Elderly Man, Wounds Woman And Two Small Children

(CBS) – A 77-year-old man was fatally wounded and two small children and a woman sustained gunshot wounds Monday evening in the city's Fernwood neighborhood.

Police say they responded to a call of a "person shot" around 6:30 p.m. in the 200 block of West 105th Street and found four people who had been hit.

Two of the victims were a 34-year-old woman and a 2-year-old she had been placing into a vehicle. The woman was hit in the chest and hand, the toddler was hit in the shoulder; both were taken to Roseland Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Two additional victims were the 77-year-old man, who had a gunshot wound to the head, and a 5-year-old male who was grazed in the arm. The man and child had been inside a residence when gunshots penetrated a window, police said.

Both were taken to Christ Hospital, where the man was pronounced. Relatives identified him as Odell Branch Sr., a great-grandfather.

Police said the shooting appeared gang-related, but details weren't immediately available.

Multiple persons of interest were in custody, police reported.
