(CBS) — One man was killed and a woman was transported to the hospital in serious condition after a house fire in Antioch Township Sunday morning, according to the Lake County Sheriff.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the 38000 block of Drexel Blvd. in unincorporated Antioch Township at 10:19 a.m.

Six of the seven people in the building escaped prior to the arrival of firefighters. 76-year-old Lowell Simonson was in an upstairs bedroom and was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.

Patricia Simonson, 74, was transported to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in serious conditions for smoke inhalation. The couple’s daughter and three grandchildren and Patricia’s disabled sister were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

According to the Lake County Sheriff, a preliminary investigation shows that the fire started in an upstairs bedroom of the three-floor home.
