Cubs Reduce Spring Training Roster To 53 Players

(CBS) The Cubs reduced their roster to 53 players Monday, with the most notable player to be sent down to minor league camp being right-hander Pierce Johnson, who's considered one of the 10 prospects in their system.

Infielder Christian Villanueva and catcher Rafael Lopez have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

In addition to Johnson, those being assigned to minor league camp are right-handed Corey Black, right-hander Armando Rivero, right-hander Donn Roach, left-handeder Hunter Cervenka and infielder Logan Watkins.

Chicago now has 28 pitchers, 10 infielders, 10 outfielders and five catchers on its spring training roster.
