17-Year-Old Girl In Serious Condition After Morgan Park Shooting

(CBS) --A 17-year-old girl is hospitalized in serious condition, after being shot in the south side Morgan Park neighborhood.

Shots rang out on the 1300 block of West 111th Street at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney. A girl who was standing on the street realized she had been shot in the chest and dialed 911.

Chicago Fire Department paramedics transported her to Christ Hospital, in Oak Lawn, where she was listed in serious condition.

"Next thing I heard screaming, 'mom they're shooting,'" a witness told CBS 2.

The witness says she saw people running in all directions and she then moved to round up kids nearby, getting them to safety.

"Because other kids were coming from the after school program ... they didn't belong to me, but I just threw them in the house," she said.

Area South police detectives are investigating. No one was in custody as of 9 p.m.

"If you know you can identify the perpetrator that discharged his weapon... just call and give his name," said community activist Andrew Holmes.

Police are looking at surveillance video from various locations to try tog et a glimpse of the shooter.
