Garcia Back In Chicago After Fundraising Trip To NYC, D.C.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayoral challenger Jesus "Chuy" Garcia was back in Chicago on Tuesday, following a two-day trip to the East Coast in search of campaign donations, volunteers, and Election Day help.

Garcia told CBS 2 he was in New York on Monday and Washington on Tuesday, to meet with leaders of the Communications Workers of America, the Service Employees International Union, and the American Federation of Teachers -- in search of their backing and assistance.

He said he also met with members of Congress and the National Association of Latino Elected Officials, a group for which he once served as a national board member.

Garcia returned home Tuesday night and said he could not afford to be away from the campaign trail in Chicago any longer. He said he hopes to have upwards of 6,000 campaign workers on the street April 7, and comes into the final two weeks of the campaign with $3 million in his warchest. Although Mayor Rahm Emanuel's fundraising dwarfs that, Garcia said it is enough to be competitive on television, on radio, and in print ads.

He expressed little concern with the most recent polls that show him down by as much as 16 points to Mayor Emanuel. He said the public polls have been wrong from the beginning and reminded reporters that the polls showed Emanuel as a clear winner in February. He said he believes he is in a "dead heat" with Emanuel.
