Aurora Mayor Calls On Alderman To Resign After Discovering Shoplifting Arrest

(CBS) -- The mayor of Aurora is calling for the resignation of an alderman now that the mayor has discovered that alderman was arrested for shoplifting in 2013.

Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner says he wants 10th Ward Alderman Lynne Johnson to resign now that he's learned that Johnson was arrested for shoplifting at the Meijer store in her ward.

The police report says Johnson and a male companion took $150 in merchandise from the store in August of 2013, including seven cosmetic items that police say Johnson had put in her purse.

Kane County Court records show Alderman Johnson pleaded guilty to the theft charges and was sentenced to court supervision and she paid a fine of $300.

A spokesman for the Aurora mayor says the mayor didn't find out about the shoplifting incident until this month when a package of information was dropped off anonymously at city hall.

The shoplifting incident happened just a few months after Alderman Lynne Johnson was elected.

She's not due for re-election for another two years.

WBBM has tried repeatedly to reach her.
