Two Women Critical After Being Struck By Minivan On South Side

(CBS/STMW) -- Two women are in critical condition after they were struck by a minivan early Sunday in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on the South Side.

The minivan was heading southbound in the 8900 block of South Stony Island about 2:40 a.m. when it struck the women as they crossed the street, police said.

Both women, ages 44 and 49, were taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

Police say that the pedestrians were crossing against the light and the minivan had the green.

The driver of the minivan stayed at the scene and was sighted for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and pedestrians in roadway to have right of way, police said.

Police can't say whether or not rain contributed to the accident.
