Fundraiser Has Raised More Than $3,000 To Help Family And Friends Pay Travel, Funeral Expenses Of Aurora Marine Who Died In Nepal

(CBS) -- A fundraising drive that has raised more than $3,000 toward funeral and travel expenses for the family and friends of a west suburban Marine killed in Nepal continues.

USMC Cpl. Sara Medina was one of the six Marines killed when their helicopter crashed on a Nepalese mountain side May 12. Medina was 23, a combat photographer and engaged to be married to another Marine, Devon Henderson.

Friend Christina Wheeler writes on the indiegogo.com fundraising page that Medina was full of "compassion, love and kindness" and blessed with "a unique personality."

"The world has lost an earthly angel, but gained one in heaven," Wheeler wrote. "There are many stories and cherished moments we will never forget."

Now, they hope to pay their respects at Medina's funeral in Aurora; some fellow Marines hope to come from overseas.

Medina was a 2010 graduate of East Aurora High School and enlisted six months later.
