Man Charged With Killing Mother, Attacking Brother In Archer Heights

A 26-year-old man has been charged with fatally stabbing and beating his mother during a domestic-related incident Wednesday night in the Archer Heights neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Maria Sadelski, 54, was found at 8:10 p.m. in the basement of her home in the 4800 block of South Karlov Avenue, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. She had apparent "blunt trauma to the head" and was dead at the scene, authorities said.

She was beaten with a hammer and knife, according to a police source.

The woman's son, Wojceich Sadelski, also struck his 30-year-old brother with a hammer and tried to hit him with a vehicle he was driving – but crashed it into a garage – after attacking his mother, police said.

Wojceich's brother was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he is listed in serious condition.

Wojceich Sadelski, who lived with his mother, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of attempted first-degree murder, all felonies, police said.

He is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday.

Esmeralda Flores, who said she lives next door to the victim and her two sons, was coming home from work when she saw one of the sons running.

"We heard a really loud noise, so we came outside and we saw that he was screaming, 'Help,' and he was on the floor," Flores told a reporter at the scene.

She saw someone sitting on top of him swinging, Flores said. Arriving officers then asked Flores and her family to go back home.

Flores said the neighbors were always cordial with her and her family.

"They're really nice to us. Whenever we're outside they say, 'Hi, how are you guys doing?'"
